Living in Sacramento and interested in getting solar for your home or business? The Sacramento Municipal Utility Districty (SMUD) has an easy solar calculator on their website to help you estimate how much you would need and how much it will cost.
If you can't afford the thousands of dollars that it will take to put solar on your roof, you can still be a part of the solar revolution. The SMUD Solar Shares program allows you to "purchase" renewable energy at a fixed rate each month. Basically, you pay a flat monthly fee to buy a "share" or a "square" on a solar farm. The square you purchase can vary in size depending on your home electricity use. On sunny months and in summer, your square produces more and you get a larger credit on your electric bill - usually just a few months. Members must stay in the program for 1 year, but anyone even condo and apartment dwellers can participate. If you move, no problem, as long as you stay in the SMUD area, you can stay in the program.
